Essential oils from plants – their biosynthetic origin, structure and uses |
anotace |
Essential oils are fragrant principles stored in special plant cells – glands,
glandular hairs, oil or resin ducts, situated in any part of a plant. Most oils
consist of complex mixtures of chemical compounds, and it is often the unique
chemical combination rather than a single component, that is responsible
for therapeutic or other bioactivities. Major categories are represented by
monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, phenols, phenylpropanoids and their various
derivatives. The oils are used in pharmaceutical, food, drink, cosmetic and
agricultural industries. These natural products also serve as a template for
identical or artificial synthetic substances and are important sources of novel
fragrance, flavour and medicinal compounds.
